Feature: KHYA – maryjane
Naarm-based, Chilean-Australian artist KHYA (pronounced KIA) (she/her) is an exceptional multi-disciplinary artist who blends the soulful sensuality of 90s R&B with the passion and drama of an old tele novela.
Having steadily built a loyal fanbase in Melbourne with her exceptional live performances and with her soundcloud-exclusive demos over the last 18 months, KHYA found an early fan in Danish R&B sensation Erika De Casier, who hand-picked KHYA to open for the Melbourne leg of her most recent Australian tour.
In addition to creating world-class R&B, KHYA is well known within the Australian LGBTQIA+ community as a core member of the House of Devine Ballroom House collective, appearing at Vogue/Ballroom events across the country.
Produced by Vetta Borne, KHYA’s debut single, “maryjane” exudes a dreamlike quality, showcasing her soulful vocals and ability to create luxurious R&B, exploring themes of lust, passion, and longing for an old flame— maryjane is always there when you need her.
Joining the ranks at Melbourne-based indie label Mirage Records, KHYA sits alongside the roster of Craigiewave, KVKA and Hancoq.
With a remix series to follow, KHYA will unveil more to her range in due course. Get ready for a lush new voice within the growing Australian R&B scene.
