Feature: DOBBY - MARSHMALLOW

Offering up a unique sound that fuses hip-hop, classical, and First Nations storytelling, DOBBY reveals his second album MARSHMALLOW. Says DOBBY of the album: 

MARSHMALLOW is a time-travel concept rap album born from my journey to reconnect with my inner child. Inspired by the 1960's Stanford University Marshmallow Experiment, as well as my unreleased 2009 project ‘The Royal Flame’, this deeply personal project weaves together themes of willpower, mental health, and artistic growth to tell a story spanning ten years of reflection, fear, and self-discovery."

The album contains previously released singles ‘≠ (Free Your Mind)’, Sabotage!’ ft. Josh Pyke, ‘Good For Nothing’, ‘FIGHT (Kim’s Song)’ and 11 more tracks including focus single ‘Lessons’.

The final showdown between DOBBY and a young Rhyan in 2009, ‘Lessons’ is the epic centrepiece of MARSHMALLOW, that begs the question; what exactly would you say to your younger self? And more importantly, how deep would you go to explain the world of today?

MARSHMALLOW follows on from his debut album WARRANGU; River Story, a powerful sonic archive of Indigenous land knowledge and environmental justice. The album won the ARIA Award for Best World Music Album and was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. Its second single, Ancestor, became the #1 most played song on FBi Radio in 2024, and the album was named Album of the Week on FBi Radio, Double J, and 2SER.  

DOBBY’s protest anthem ‘I CAN’T BREATHE’ won Best Video at the FBi SMAC Awards in 2020, and his 2024 single ‘Until We’re All Free’ was nominated for the same award. Both tracks are now used in schools to support education around First Nations justice and the Bla(c)k Lives Matter movement.
