FEATURE: Munroe - Said and Done
MUNROE state their case as one of the most exciting names in the scene with their honest lyricism and warm, unmistakable Australian-twang - Revealing their latest EP Said And Done.
Said And Done is the combination of six deeply personal songs; exploring heartbreak, memory, change and the lingering impact of things left unsaid - finding meaning in the quiet moments that remain after everything is supposedly said and done.
As explained by frontman/lyricist CALLUM RIORDAN - rather than focusing on breakups, major decisions or defining moments themselves, the EP explores what comes afterwards.
“It’s about the lingering emotions, memories and unanswered questions that remain long after life has moved on. Across the EP, we hear of narrators who are constantly at a crossroads. There’s wanting to move forward while still looking back, seeking connection while struggling to communicate, and embracing change while fearing its consequences. At no stage across the EP is an actual resolution to things being ‘Said and Done’, and instead the songs expose the emotional residue of our decisions, and that this residue is something that will remain with us and shape us.”
This sense of change and renewal is clear on ‘Spring’ - one of the more somber moments on the EP, a song that looks at regret and reflection in the wake of a breakup.
As discussed by Riordan, Spring as a theme helped inform the imagery and lyricism across the EP;
“Spring, in this EP, doesn’t simply symbolise renewal. It symbolises that change and healing don’t arrive all at once, and is a process that must be weathered to come out renewed on the other side.”
Another theme explored throughout Said And Done is that of communication, and how it can change, break and heal the trajectory of relationships.
“Characters repeatedly wrestle with things left unsaid, words spoken too late, misunderstandings and failed attempts to articulate what they really feel. In ‘For Fiona’, the narrator learns to talk and fears the consequences. In ‘Spring’, they regret not saying more. In ‘Happening Again’, they fill entire books trying to reach someone. In ‘My Time’, they postpone difficult conversations until a reckoning becomes unavoidable. All were written during a time of intense introspection and sum up a period of intense personal change. They’re songs about an aftermath, and what comes after change. After everything is Said and Done (call back!!).” - CALLUM RIORDAN, MUNROE
The EP was recorded at Wick Studios in Brunswick over an intense 3-day period, with Andre Johansson-Walder (The Goon Sax, The Comets) on recording, mixing and mastering duties.
On the recording process, Riordan says
“We’d been playing most of these songs regularly live in the year leading up to recording this EP. The exhilaration of having only 34 hours to get the bulk of the recording down kept us honest. And it was probably a good thing, not too much time to overthink things. They’re six raw songs, and we wanted to capture that.”
