Label Spotlight - May | Headnoiz

Label Spotlight - May | Headnoiz

Headnoiz is an electronic music platform operating as a record label and event series on unceded Gadigal Land in Eora (Sydney).

Formed in 2019 as a techno-focused event series, Headnoiz quickly established itself by promoting local artists alongside forward thinking interstate and international guests. Over time, the project evolved toward the hybrid techno/trance sound it’s now known for, a reflection of the collective’s shifting musical influences through production, performance, and events.

Headnoiz is proudly Australian, with a strong commitment to showcasing local talent. Most of the music, design, and creative output is produced in-house by members of the collective, with additional contributions from Australian creatives across all projects. Another major undertaking by the collective is Outsider Festival. A three-day, community focused gathering held annually in the NSW bush, dedicated to cutting-edge electronic music and high-end production. A city-based edition has recently been introduced to expand its reach. Both formats prioritise local showcases, offering emerging collectives a platform to present their work on a world class stage, helping to garner international recognition and affirm their local cultural significance.

For AIR's May Label Spotlight we caught up with the Ethan Pisani from Headnoiz to learn more.

HOW WAS HEADNOIZ CREATED? WHAT IS HEADNOIZ ALL ABOUT?

Headnoiz started in 2019 as a platform to share our specific taste in electronic music. It initially took shape as a series of club nights and warehouse events before evolving into a record label with the release of HDNZ001 in November 2022.

Musically, the label has moved with our own tastes over time, but the core aesthetic is heavily influenced by independent dance music labels of the 90s and early 2000s.

Alongside the music, we have always been committed to championing Australian talent while connecting our artists to a wider international audience through our relationships with overseas labels and collectives.

WHAT WAS THE MOMENT WHEN YOU DECIDED YOU WANTED TO START A LABEL?
The decision came from a feeling that the type of music we were passionate about wasn't being represented in Australia at the time.

That has changed significantly over the past six years, with a lot of labels emerging in the same sphere, but back then it felt like a genuine gap. We started by running club nights, warehouse parties and DJ residencies, and eventually that energy found its natural home in an actual label.

It was less a single moment and more a gradual realisation that what we were building deserved a more permanent structure.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST WAYS FOR A LABEL TO SUPPORT THEIR ARTISTS?
Platforming artists in a considered and thoughtful way. For us, that means providing opportunities to perform in front of engaged audiences at events and venues that actually make sense for where they are at. It also means giving their work the best possible chance of being received well, through strong marketing, proper presentation, and a clear creative vision behind every release. Beyond that, a big part of what we do is absorb the logistical side of putting out a record, covering distribution, admin and coordination, so the artist can stay focused on making music rather than getting buried in process.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN ARTIST AND THEIR INDEPENDENT LABEL?
Effective communication and transparency. There is no hierarchy here. We treat every artist as a collaborator, and being upfront about timelines, expectations and the realities of what a release can achieve builds the kind of trust that allows the creative work to flourish.

ANY ADVICE TO OTHERS WANTING TO WORK IN THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR?
B
e patient and stay close to the music. The independent sector does not reward shortcuts. It rewards people who are embedded in a scene and building something with real conviction. Start small, do it properly, and do not wait for permission from anyone. The other thing worth saying is to build relationships before you need them. The connections we made through years of running events were foundational to everything the label has become.

WHAT ARE YOU DRAWN TO WHEN YOU DECIDE TO SIGN AN ACT?
Aside from the music making sense, it comes down to personal connection and some level of involvement in what we do.

When an artist has made a clear effort to support us, even in a small way, whether that is buying a ticket to a launch event, picking up one of our previous records, playing our music in a DJ set, or supporting a release on socials, that means a lot to us.

It tells us the artist is willing to approach the relationship collaboratively and invest in making it work.

At our scale especially, that kind of mutual commitment is what makes the difference between a release that lands and one that does not.

DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCLUSIVE NEWS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT HEADNOIZ?
We have an exciting physical release schedule for 2026, with HDNZ004 through 007 all in motion and representing some of our most considered output to date.

Alongside that, we are launching a new series of collaborative events in Sydney and have a digital release series in the works that sits alongside the vinyl program and gives us more flexibility in how we put music out. It is shaping up to be our most active year yet.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT LABELS AND ARTISTS?
The continued emergence of new tools and platforms that shift power toward independent operators.

Something like Nina Protocol is a good example, platforms that give artists and labels new ways to release, own and monetise their work outside of the traditional structures.

The infrastructure for independent music is evolving fast, and the labels that stay curious and adapt to those tools will be well positioned.

For us, it reinforces the conviction that you do not need to compromise your vision to build something sustainable.

WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING AT HEADNOIZ?

It is a busy period. We just came off the back of Outsider Festival 2026, which was the largest edition we have run, around 700 people across three days with 12 international artists, a real milestone for us. On the label side we are working through our 2026 release schedule, which includes some of our most ambitious output to date. We are also continuing to grow our international connections with artists and labels we respect, which opens up opportunities for our roster that would not have existed a few years ago. A lot of moving parts, but all pointing in the right direction.
