Label Spotlight | February - Lustre
HOW WAS LUSTRE CREATED? WHAT LUSTRE ALL ABOUT? LUSTRE was founded in 2015 in Brunswick Heads to amplify important musical voices on a global scale. Emerging as Soundcloud and Spotify democratised music distribution, it focused on "small but mighty" bedroom producers who suddenly had worldwide reach at low cost. Inspired by Northern NSW's DIY ethos and natural beauty, LUSTRE worked with left-leaning communities and artists creating unassuming but globally resonant work. The name refers to a mineralogy term describing how light reflects.. fitting for projects that found audiences in unexpected spaces.
WHAT WAS THE MOMENT WHEN YOU DECIDED YOU WANTED TO START A LABEL? WAS IT WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO OR HAVE YOU WANTED OR DID SOMETHING ELSE LEAD TO IT? We’d always had the idea that running a label could be a natural extension of the very hands-on management work we were doing. The opportunity presented itself with a band we were managing, Tora. They didn’t want to sign a major or traditional indie deal, but they needed additional support and investment. So we built the label around that project, almost out of necessity. It wasn’t a grand strategic plan at the time - it was a practical response to an artist we believed in.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST WAYS FOR A LABEL TO SUPPORT THEIR ARTISTS? There are so many variables to that question. It depends on the label’s identity, the artist’s stage of development, and the genre or environment they’re operating in. A major label is fundamentally different to a small indie - one is closer to venture capital, the other is more genuinely artist development. A country artist in their early stages needs different support than an established electronic act. What matters most is being clear about your value proposition: what you bring, how you work, and why an artist should sign with you. For us, that’s about trust, long-term development, DIY mentality, doing a lot with a little, and being able to plug into global networks to help build sustainable careers.
What makes a good relationship between an artist and their independent label? Trust, respect, humility, and self-awareness. We’re convinced that the artists with the longest, most successful careers are those who can ride the highs and lows and maintain healthy relationships. That means learning to embrace friction - being open to difficult conversations, being willing to grow and evolve together. It’s not a straight shot but a cycle of growth. It’s about trust and partnership. That long-term view is everything. We also believe there is a duty of care to artists and are always looking to integrate more ways of supporting artists mentally and emotionally.
This isn’t a tokensitc thing - it’s something Narayan and I live and breathe as humans as well as business owners.
ANY ADVICE TO OTHERS WANTING TO WORK IN THE INDEPENDENT SECTOR? Strap in. Be committed to it. Learn to hustle. Be prepared to ride the ups and downs - they’re inevitable. Know when to ask for help, build real relationships, and stay curious. There’s no single pathway, but there is a community, so most importantly….be a good human. It’s also important to remember that we’re not saving lives and are so privileged be able to work in this way at all.
WHAT ARE YOU DRAWN TO WHEN YOU DECIDE TO SIGN AN ACT?
First, of course, it’s the songs and the artist - that’s always the entry point. But increasingly, it’s also who they are as people. We’re building a business around relationships and long-term vision, so trust and alignment matters. We’ve had situations where the music was incredible but the relationship wasn’t workable, and that taught us a lot. Now we’re looking for artists who want to build with us, as well as being exceptional creatives.
DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCLUSIVE NEWS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT LUSTRE? We’ve just signed an incredible artist called Sage Dwyer. It’s a development-focused project, but that’s where we thrive and what excites us. She’s extraordinary - somewhere between Sinéad O’Connor and Julia Jacklin - so watch this space.
WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT LABEL AND ARTISTS? We feel like there’s a genuine appetite for alternative, art-driven pop - records like Rosalia’s have proven that. That space between pop ambition and artistic risk is where we naturally sit, so it’s exciting to see the market embracing that spirit.
What is currently happening at LUSTRE? (tours/signings etc.) We have a number of new signings on the horizon, starting with Sage Dwyer, so we’re looking at a refreshed roster but also a restructured way of working that really leans into all the technology available to us, the partnerships we;ve built globally, and allows us to do more creatively with our artists.
