Indie-Con returned to Adelaide, Australia’s first and only UNESCO-designated City of Music this week.Three Days of programming took place at the Mercury Cinema, with delegates and speakers from the independent music sector both locally and further afield, including representatives from USA, UK, Europe and NZ.
A broad range of topics was discussed, including:
Protecting Copyrights In The AI Era which explored the threats and opportunities of AI generative technology in creating music.
Fairplay for Pay explored the campaign to remove caps from the copyright act that protect commercial radio from paying artists and rights holders more than 1%. It also touched on the bigger issue of how much we value art in Australia and the secondary issue of radio quotas for Australian artists.
Marketing Campaigns and The Power of PR invited teams from this year’s AIR Award nominees including Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers, Confidence Man and Flume to share insights with the audience on what made their campaigns effective,  and explained how to deepen the connection with fans.
Navigating The Changing DSP Landscape discussed the importance of the long tail of the release plan and how release timelines have evolved to focus more on the time post-release.
Green Is Now delved into the opportunities available to operate in a way that is less damaging to the environment. It offered some practical solutions artists and labels can enact now to make a start and suggested that what is sustainable is often more affordable too.
Newly launched Tik Tok Music took to the stage to talk about engagement strategies and Sounds Australia discussed the pros and cons of showcasing.
AIR CEO Maria Amato interviewed Australia Council CEO Adrian Collette on Music Australia.
