Feature: Alana Wilkinson – Half Time Oranges

Smiling musical assassin Alana Wilkinson is disarms the listener with her collection of vignettes about the human condition in her debut album Half Time Oranges.

Whether listening to her song break banter or her musical musings, Alana Wilkinson’s stories skewer ex-lovers, ridiculous social norms and the absurd challenges of a suburban upbringing in a merciless, yet strangely affectionate way, leaving audiences feeling like they’re sitting in her living room, chatting about life over a steaming cuppa.

Half Time Oranges is a collection of stories that have been collected from all corners of her world, leaving no truth untold, with something anyone can relate to.

No stranger to the triumphs and trials of motherhood, the record touches on her journey with her firstborn son in ‘Dream Big’, the comical side of new mum brain fog in ‘With A Boob Out’, which reached over 100k people on Youtube, and ‘Charlie’s Song’; a dedication to a family and baby in the NICU she bonded with.

Co-produced by Alana with Paul Ruskewhen her firstborn son was about 9 months old, “My husband would bring him to the studio so I could breastfeed him between takes. After 8 taking-it-easy months of preprod, we recorded with the band at The Music Farm in the hinterland of Byron Bay. It was wonderful to hear these songs burst to life.

With previous singles pulling on all heartstrings and dreaming up the world’s most embarrassing moments in relatable catchy tunes, they are joined by a collection of songs that make up the other half of Half Time Oranges, including feature single ‘Ultraviolet’.

Ultraviolet was inspired by my dear friend Jack. It’s about all of his vibrance and some of the many moments that I’ve been disappointed in the world’s response to it. His story is important and I wanted to share as much of it as I could fit into a few minutes because our rainbow brothers and sisters deserve the fucking spotlight, and should not need to hide themselves away to be safe.’ – Alana Wilkinson
