Feature: Harper Bloom – Flutterby
A triumphant return for Harper Bloom, unleashing their sophomore EP Flutterby a reflection of their growth as an artist and an individual.
The story behind Flutterby is as heartfelt as the song itself, with the writing process beginning years ago with a bridge and melody that Harper struggled to fit into any other song.
The lyric “watching our lives, Flutterby” came to life during bushwalks with Liz, a 60-year-old pianist and activist with early-onset Alzheimer’s, whom Harper has been supporting for the past two years.
“Liz has become nothing short of my best friend. Despite her struggles, she’s helped me grow as a musician and as a queer person. She came up with the lyric “Flutterby”, so this song holds a special place in my heart,” says Harper.
Harper reached out to London-based producer Charlie Westropp (Maisie Peters, Gabrielle Aplin) after being drawn to his work with emerging indie-pop artists. The collaboration proved to be a perfect match, with Charlie producing multiple tracks on the EP, including ‘All The Kids’, ‘Pinwheel’, and assisting on ‘Dodo’. Harper’s time in London, where she connected with various writers and performed in pubs, was pivotal in shaping the sound of Flutterby.
The Flutterby EP marks a new chapter for Harper Bloom.
Reflective of her journey, the EP is both a culmination of her past experiences and a bold step into her future. Musically and personally, Harper has evolved, embracing her identity as a proud queer and androgynous person.
“This EP is a triumphant moment for me. I finally understand music in a way I never did before, and I’m excited to help other LGBTQIA+ people feel empowered by their identities, just as I have through this process. Flutterby is reflective but confident, and I believe it’s the start of something big for me.“
Growing in confidence, musicality and skill, Flutterby is a new era of Harper Bloom’s career and gives listeners a refreshing new take on inclusive indie-pop.
