Feature: Gypsy Lee – Pretty In The Dark
Gypsy Lee channels old-school musicality with evocative lyrics and intriguing melodies on her title track from the forthcoming debut EP Pretty In The Dark.
Revealing an insight into what it’s like as a teenage girl growing up in this society where there’s so much pressure to look a certain way;
“This song is probably one of the darker songs I’ve written. I had failed, I was broken-hearted, I disliked myself and I faced many trials, but this song helped me to work out what is important and who I am. It’s about me picking myself up again and realising that being beautiful and kind on the inside, is more valuable and real than anything else.” Gypsy explained the release.
Pretty In The Dark is a 5-track project telling her story of vulnerable moments of sadness, happiness and growth.
Of the project, Gypsy reflected –
“This EP is a record of the stories and memories, which though painful, I’m now happy to share. It is extremely special to me as it’s my youth’s diary. I started writing these songs in 2020, and I’ve gone back and forth many times since on the idea of even releasing music at all.”
Pretty In The Dark marks the second solo release for Gypsy ahead of her debut EP in August.
The single and the EP was produced by Andrew Lowden, a multi-hyphenate creator performing under the moniker Thrones, who co-wrote and produced the entire project.
Thrones has previously scored numerous US Billboard top 10 releases with Janiva Magness’, cracked the Triple J Hottest 100 and won 2015 ‘NIMA Song Of The Year’ with Thelma Plum’s ‘How Much Does Your Love Cost’, currently in conjunction with Nat Dunn and Matt Corby is working with newcomer Jillian Loux.
Accompanied by a visualiser which was filmed in one shot, one take. “When someone’s sad or not doing well, they tend to cover it up with makeup. I wanted to show me deciding to stop doing that and work on the “inside me” as that’s what really matters,” says Gypsy.
Pretty In The Dark, the title track from her forthcoming debut EP is available to stream now; her debut EP is due for release on August 2nd.
